Ruf is renowned for producing machines with dramatic headline figures, but two decades since it rolled off the production line, we’ve put the firm’s RTurbo to the test to find out just how much of its edge remains. To read the story in full, pick up your copy of issue 285 out now in shops and available online via Mags Direct.
Based on the 996-generation 911, the RTurbo features the same 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six and (optionally) bodywork as the Turbo, but similarities don’t go much further. Upgraded KKK turbochargers, modified VarioCam engine mounts, the rear differential from the GT2 and a host of other upgrades make it a different beast entirely.
British motoring journalist Jethro Bovingdon will host the new Top Gear America

Jethro Bovingdon is bored of comparisons with Jeremy Clarkson. As a motoring journalist of nearly two decades, “in my job, whenever you’re at a party and you tell someone what you do, they go: ‘Oh, a bit like Jeremy Clarkson, then.’”
He laughs: “And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but without the money and fame.’”
That could be about to change. Bovingdon is the new co-host of Top Gear America, the stars-and-stripes spinoff of the BBC motoring juggernaut, which is streaming weekly on discovery+. He’s the British straight man of the presenting line-up, bringing a level-headed expertise to the off-beat energy of his American co-hosts, Rob Corddry and Dax Shepard. Think of him as the James May to Corddry’s Richard Hammond and Shepard’s Jeremy Clarkson – or don’t.
