New World’s SMEG knife promotion was so popular that it couldn’t meet customer demand.
OPINION: In its recent SMEG knife promotion, New World gave out 1.1 million knives and 50,000 knife blocks to customers. The company reckons one in five Kiwi households now has a SMEG knife. Sales in New World supermarkets bounced up nicely, which obviously pleased store owners. A success all round, you’d think. Perhaps not. Thousands of customers were left with full books of stickers and in the last week there were no knives in the shops to give them. There were angry scenes in some places.
