Best of CES 2021 finalists

January 12th, 2021 Engadget We’ll admit, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect when we agreed to judge the annual Best of CES Awards without an in-person show. How many companies would show up to an online-only show? What would we lose without being able to wander the halls of a massive convention center and see the products up close? As it turns out, we needn’t have worried. More than 1,900 brands, big and small, turned up this year, according to the Consumer Technology Association, the industry group that organizes the show each year. What’s more, many companies found socially distant ways to show us their latest and greatest in person, ahead of the show. (That’s especially useful for the TV category, wouldn’t you say?)

Our favorite games of 2020

December 21st, 2020 While some forms of entertainment like movies and sports were hit hard by the pandemic, gaming actually thrived in 2020. Since we were all stuck indoors, we spent a lot more time in front of screens, discovering new experiences, replaying older classics and a few of us even made a dent in our backlogs, aka the “pile of shame.” To that end, the Engadget staff presents a slightly different list of our favorite games of 2020: not just the most impactful titles that came out this year, but also the older games that kept us company during this crazy time.

Engadget The Morning After

If you’re wondering how we got into this mess, then Jessica Conditt has all the answers available to your question: What the hell is going on with Cyberpunk 2077? If you’re in the group of people playing (and, despite all odds, possibly enjoying) the game, the developers have released yet another patch. The 1.05 hotfix addresses a bunch of quest problems, and may help HDR look better on your PlayStation or Xbox console try it out. Richard Lawler The biggest winners and losers of tech in 2020 This week, Cherlynn and Devindra look back at 2020 to figure out who were the biggest winners and losers of tech. From Apple’s M1 chip to the downfall of Quibi, it was a year of serious highs and lows for the tech industry, especially once you factor how the COVID-19 pandemic changed our lives.

Tech s biggest losers in 2020

December 15th, 2020 It’d be easy to just say all of 2020 was terrible and call it a day. But while most of the year was awful for everyone, some things in tech suffered more than others. TikTok, for example, got jerked around by the Trump administration for months, only to be ghosted at the end of the year. Streaming services thrived, sure, but one in particular was both born and killed all within 2020.  If you were hoping to buy yourself some relief from the pervasive dread and banality by getting some next-gen graphics cards or gaming consoles, all you got was more disappointment thanks to poorly prepared retailers. And, as always, there were terrible gadgets filling in as cherries topping the garbage cake that was 2020. Still, we made it. Perhaps instead of admitting we were all losers in 2020, we can feel better about leaving it all behind us by looking back at the worst things tech served up this year.
