FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) â More than 1.4 million unemployment insurance claims have been filed in Kentucky since March according to the state s Labor Cabinet.
Officials say more than $5 billion has been paid out so far.
But for the thousands that remain unanswered, that s still not enough.
When Kentucky was effectively closed for business in March, many restaurants, retail shops, and all schools locked their doors.
That left thousands of workers scrambling for unemployment benefits, including Hannah Puckett.
Puckett didn t receive benefits for months, so her mother reached out to LEX18 for help reaching someone in Frankfort.

Grandfather Brian Rolan became homeless in Nicholasville his home of 10 years in December 2019. Despite battling health issues and losing his job, Rolan always kept his head above water.
“It was kind of frustrating at first,” he admitted to LEX 18, “but then this voice in the back of my head kept telling me, ‘You’re going to be alright.’”

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) â Opening a new business can be risky, but doing it during a pandemic brings more challenges.
One small business owner hopes her new coffee shop brings something unique and positive to Jessamine County during this time.
âWe have been, as a family, talking about it for forever. My family has been in the restaurant industry for multiple years and we just decided, you know, why not? We think it will be a good thing to do,â said Kara Hoagland, owner of Coffee @ Oak & Main.

Beshear said case numbers are continuing to decline and Kentucky’s positivity rate is stable.
As of 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon Governor Beshear reported 3,388 new COVID-19 cases and a positivity rate 8.58%. The Governor also said there are 1,655 people hospitalized, 438 currently in the ICU, and 253 on a ventilator. Beshear reported 27 deaths which pushes the statewide death toll to 2,371.
Top counties with the most positive cases Saturday were Jefferson, Kenton, Fayette, Pulaski, Daviess, Boone, Campbell and Warren. Each of these counties reported 100 or more new cases; Jefferson County alone reported 459.
Those reported lost to the virus today include a 62-year-old man from Bell County; a 75-year-old man from Christian County; a 92-year-old woman and five men from Daviess County; a 61-year-old man from Fayette County; a 50-year-old man from Grayson County; a 63-year-old woman from Hancock County; an 85-year-old woman from Hardin County; a 79-year-old man and two women, ages 58
