PETALING JAYA, Jan 26 Klang Valley residents are all too familiar with the frustration of dealing with frequent water cuts.
Millions were plagued with dry taps on various occasions in 2020 due to mishaps ranging from burst pipes to water pollution.
These incidents proved that uninterrupted access to clean water is a crucial need in our daily routines, especially in the fight against Covid-19 where frequent handwashing is essential.
GROWING up in the small town of Pusing in rural Perak, Sunway Group chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah had many childhood friends whose futures were bleak because they could not afford schooling.
“The poverty and hardships that surrounded me formed my conviction that education provides the best route out of poverty and misery,” says Cheah in an interview with The Edge.
Those early impressions prompted him to set up the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), which aims “to create a better, sustainable future for all Malaysians, particularly through quality education and research”.
The foundation completed its first decade last year, having awarded close to RM540 million in scholarships and grants.
THE Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) has made sustainable development (SD) a core part of its vision and mission, giving it momentum by setting up the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development (JSC) in 2016. Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah answers questions from The Edge about the steps taken to make the SD agenda the basis for the Sunway Group’s contributions to society. The following are excerpts from the interview.
The Edge: How is the JCF catalysing a shift in the national outlook towards a borderless, cooperative and inclusive society and economy?
Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah: For a country to prosper, it is not enough just to have education. It should also be of high quality, and made affordable and accessible.
