SAN DIEGO James and Sarah Slavinsky were on an anniversary trip when they needed to help with a rescue mission.
The two Chandler residents were in San Diego to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
They decided to go by Point Loma near Cabrillo National Monument. There they saw a boat struggling. The waves were just tearing that little boat apart, James said.
The boat would soon crash against a reef and start to split a part. First three people jumped in the water, followed by dozens more.
DOWNTOWN (KUSI) – An investigation was continuing today into an apparent human-smuggling operation involving a boat that overturned in coastal waters near Point Loma over the weekend, killing three people and injuring more than two dozen others.
A total of 29 people survived the ocean accident, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, which Monday morning suspended its efforts to locate any other victims at sea.
The accident happened about 10 a.m. Sunday, when the 40-foot trawler-style vessel crashed into the shoreline near Cabrillo National Monument and capsized, according to the Border Patrol. All the occupants jumped in the water as the boat slowly disintegrated, a bystander’s video showed.

SAN DIEGO An overloaded boat crashed into a reef and broke apart off the coast of San Diego on Sunday morning, leaving at least three people dead and more than two dozen hospitalized in what officials said was a suspected human smuggling attempt.
The boat, described as a 40-foot cabin cruiser, was spotted off the coast of the Point Loma area a short time before 10 a.m. near the Cabrillo National Monument, officials said.
