OXFORD â¢Â As litigation over unclear residency requirements awaits a ruling from the stateâs highest court, Oxfordâs election commission on Tuesday night certified a candidate for June s general election despite previous eligibility concerns.
The commission voted this week to certify Afton Thomas, the Democratic candidate for the boardâs Ward 2 seat.
Commissioners previously questioned whether she should appear on the ballot because she had not lived in the ward sheâs hoping to represent for at least two years. A recent opinion from Attorney General Lynn Fitch s office states that a 2019 election law requires candidates for municipal office to live in both the ward and municipality they wish to represent for at least that amount of time.

Judge Jeff Weill’s 64-page order said there was undeniable evidence of “fraud and criminal activity” during a Democratic runoff election. Some of the aspects of the past election marred by fraud included the handling of absentee ballots, the counting of votes and activities by certain individuals at the polling place.
Weill called for a repeat of the Democratic runoff elections in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Robert Devaull and Nicholas Holliday are vying for the position of alderman in Aberdeen Ward 1. Holliday originally won the Ward 1 seat by a 37-vote margin, but Devaull challenged the results.

The mayor pro tem of a Northern California city resigned after he pleaded guilty to election fraud, according to local reports last week.
Crescent City Mayor Pro Tem Alex Campbell entered the plea to making a false declaration of candidacy in Del Norte County Superior Court, local news outlet Wild Rivers Outpost reported, citing the city’s clerk’s office.
Campbell submitted a form to the Del Norte County Clerk on Aug. 6, 2020, saying his current address was in Crescent City, when his actual residence was outside the city limits, Deputy District Attorney Eric Bryant told Del Norte County Superior Court Judge Bob Cochran.
