ALEXANDRIA, Va. It’s expected to take several days for the Colonial Pipeline, North America’s biggest petroleum pipeline, to recover from Friday’s cyberattack that halted shipments of gasoline and other fuels, raising concerns about possible shortages.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a fuel waiver for the Mid-Atlantic to help alleviate fuel shortages in states whose supply of reformulated gasoline has been impacted by the pipeline shutdown. The EPA has waived the federal Reid vapor pressure requirements for fuel sold in Reformulated Gasoline areas of District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to facilitate the supply of gasoline. This waiver will continue through May 18.

The panic of drivers buying motorbikes in response to a cyberattack on an interstate fuel pipeline has led to depletion at gas stations scattered across the southeastern U.S., and the federal government has led to the suspension of pollution regulations to maintain energy flow.
The colonial pipeline has been closed since Friday when the FBI said it was a purchase attack hacking team Called DarkSide. The 5,500-mile network carries gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from refineries in the Gulf of Mexico to markets on the east coast of the United States.

The ransomware attack on the East Coast s biggest fuel pipeline could ripple across the economy for months, experts say, even if fuel starts flowing again soon. Panic buying is already pushing up gasoline prices even before the summer driving season begins, and airlines may have to get creative to avoid flight cancellations.
Colonial Pipeline 5,500-mile Texas-to-New-York conduit has been shut down since a ransomware attack hit the company on Friday. This route carries about 45 percent of the East Coast s fuel supply about 100 million combined gallons of petroleum, diesel, and jet fuel per month. While Colonial says it hopes to restore most operations by the weekend, that might be too late to avoid cascading consequences.

The National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) industry trade group warns that a worsening semi-truck driver shortage may spark higher fuel prices and gas shortages this summer.
CNN reported that industry group said about a quarter of tanker trucks aren t on the road ahead of the busy summer driving season as there s a shortage in qualified drivers available. Before the pandemic, about 10% of the tanker trucks were idled for similar reasons. We ve been dealing with a driver shortage for a while, but the pandemic took that issue and metastasized it, said Ryan Streblow, the executive vice president of the NTTC. It certainly has grown exponentially.
