Leon Spinks remembered - Boxing News

Leon Spinks remembered Michael Marley pays tribute to Leon Spinks, the fun-loving champion who conquered ‘The Greatest’ MAKING a mockery, an often meanspirited lampoon of his gap-toothed look and mangled speech and even his hair, was a sort of cottage industry for comedians. From Johnny Carson to the brilliant Richard Pryor and far beyond, it was open season on Leon Spinks. Even his 1978 shock victory over Muhammad Ali did not stop the jokes. “Leon was upstairs brushing his tooth” was a typical jest. The fact that he survived and thrived first in the hellhole Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis and then served honourably in the Marine Corps and won an Olympic gold medal in 1976 in Montreal was rarely mentioned.

JEFF POWELL remembers the lovable, larger-than-life character Leon Spinks was after his tragic death

Share Leon Spinks guffawed through the trademark gap in his front teeth and shouted: ‘Thank God for that, man. There’s still some people out there not too happy that I beat Muhammad Ali.’ Then, just in case it had slipped our minds, he reminded us: ‘I am the only man ever to beat The Greatest when he was the world heavyweight champion.’ That he was in life, since the other times Ali lost his championship came with officialdom stripping him outside the ring. That Neon Leon remains in death, untimely suffered this weekend from prostate cancer at only 67. Spinks rocked Ali and the boxing world on to its feet with his famous victory in 1978

After 26 years editing the Daily Mail, Paul Dacre will be bored to tears by Ofcom red tape

3 February 2021 After 26 years editing the Daily Mail, Paul Dacre will be bored to tears by Ofcom red tape If he does go to Ofcom, Dacre will have far less sway over the news agenda of the BBC than he used to have in his old job. It is not known whether Boris Johnson is an enthusiast for Louis Althusser’s critique of Antonio Gramsci’s idea of cultural hegemony, but it looks as if he might be. The prospect of Paul Dacre, the former editor of the Daily Mail and editor-in-chief of Associated Newspapers, becoming the next chair of Ofcom, the communications regulator, is the latest indication that the Prime Minister is keen to fill the ideological state apparatus with fellow travellers who will carry on the cultural struggle. The defining idea of British broadcasting, which is its neutrality, seems to be in the dock.
