NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Growing up on James Island, Jacinta Bryant understood the value of education at a young age.
Every morning on her way to school, Bryant’s mother would drive her past McLeod Plantation. She would watch as the white houses, formerly occupied by slaves, went by her window.
“My mom always said to me when we passed by, ‘You know what? Your ancestors were killed and severely beaten just because they wanted to learn to read and write,’” Bryant, who is Black, said. “‘There were grave consequences for them, but those consequences should be placed in a positive light for you. I want you to build from that foundation.’”
More US Companies Offering Incentives To Get Workers Vaccinated
President Joe Biden is offering tax credits to companies with fewer than 500 employees that give workers time off to get vaccinated, but some companies are offering more incentives, including bonuses.
The grocery chain Lidl is offering employees a $200 bonus when they get the COVID-19 vaccine. I do think the money is a really good way to, like, encourage people to get vaccinated because right now money is tight, said store associate Dakota Bryant.
She has worked through the pandemic. I do definitely feel safer, she said after getting vaccinated.
Store manager Julia Christophe said getting the shot was even emotional.

The University of Montanaâs Genomics Core Laboratory will soon begin research on COVID-19 variants after the lab has spent the last few weeks finalizing its research procedures.Â
The laboratory adds variant surveillance research to its efforts against COVID-19 after it began analyzing COVID-19 tests last fall.Â
âThis is pretty good for the Core actually, [to] take up this kind of work [and] then the Core is happy to do it. It did impact our other services around the campus, for other labsâ research. But again, everybody knows itâs a pandemic, so everybody understands this is a priority,â David Xing, the Genomics Laboratory manager, said.Â
