Those who knew Charlene âCharlieâ Welch knew she loved two things dearly, caring for her dogs and making cool clothing items for those close to her.
The fundraising golf tournament that runs at Markâs Nine Golf and Country Club each year in her honour pays homage to both of those elements.
Heading into its eighth annual event, the Charlieâs Angels Golf Tournament has raised over $110,000 toward the Prince Albert SPCA to ensure dogs and cats that Charlie would have loved can be taken care of.
âHer fur babies, she probably treated them better than her two-legged babies,â said Holly Abrey-Hare, a tournament organizer and Charlieâs friend. âIf you knew her, you knew her fur babies were her children. She actually passed away from cancer, but we wanted to support the SPCAâ especially now. What can they do for fundraisers? Theyâve come to rely on us and weâre happy to oblige.â

Carter Serhyenko has a chance to accomplish something quite rare, get selected in the NHL Entry Draft as a goaltender from the Prince Albert Raiders.
Since Serhyenko was born back in 2002, only two Raiders goalies have been selected by NHL teams. Ian Scott was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fourth round in 2017, and Rejean Beauchemin was picked in 2003 by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round.
Before Beauchemin, you have to go all the way back to 1999 when then-Raider Evan Lindsay was selected into the NHL. In fact, Lindsay was actually drafted twice, in 1999 by the Montreal Canadiens in the fourth round, after the Calgary Flames picked him in the second round of the 1997 draft.
The Chicago Blackhawks selected Nolan Allan with the 32
nd pick of the draft a selection the team acquired earlier on Friday in the Seth Jones trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, the San Jose Sharks famously selected Ozzy Wiesblatt, and did so in sign language so his mother Kim White would recognize it.
Shortly after the pick, Wiesblatt took to Twitter to congratulate Allan on the accomplishment.
Congrats al, no one more deserving Chicago you guys got a special one. https://t.co/ayRy1SacMj

“[Before,] we were just doing the three cheers and a wave from across the diamond saying, ‘thanks for the game.’ Well, it was unanimously decided that this would be the first time that we will shake hands, get to say ‘good game,’ give high-fives and do it the traditional way,” Kovitch said. “Even that last final restriction is no longer in place, so it’s going to be cool to see. I’m excited about it.”
Kovitch said the U12 A Aces have adjusted through the unusual year very well, and have hopes to earn a medal. The Aces won the bronze medal at the Shaye Amundson Memorial Tournament earlier this month.
