In the first part of our offseason review, we looked at the Big Picture. I came away encouraged at the leap that GT took statistically from 2019 to 2020, especially as we looked at where the team’s overall performance in key advanced stats placed us nationally. Tech rose from the bottom of the P5 to close to the middle of the pack in the very predictive metrics of net Success Rate, Yards Per Play, and EPA/play.
This week, we’re going to dive more deeply into the offensive performance. What can the advanced numbers tell us about what happened in 2020 and where the focus needs to be in preparing for the upcoming year?

The recognition is well deserved for Georgia Tech punter Pressley Harvin III. Having already received first-team all-ACC honors, more good news came in as Harvin was named first-team all-America by ESPN, and he was selected as one of three finalists for the 2020 Ray Guy Award. As the article mentions, the winner of the Ray Guy award will be named during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will broadcast by ESPN on January 7th. Congratulations to Harvin for the well-deserved recognition and for an impressive career as a Yellow Jacket.

Who are your offensive, defensive, and overall MVPs from this year? Oh, and special teams if it’s anyone other than PH3. - SullyGT
Ben: On offense, while I think there is a case for Jahmyr Gibbs, I’m going to say Jeff Sims. The entire offense ran through him, and I think he had a lot more pressure on him since Tech actually has good running backs other than Gibbs. On defense, I will go with Jordan Domineck. Tech did not have much in terms of a pass rush, but what they did have mostly came from Domineck. On special teams, I’m gonna say Gavin Stewart. I think Tech has finally gotten a decent kicker and his brother is Brad Stewart. Gavin only went 2-for-3 on field goals, but he went 22-of-24 on PAT attempts, which is great, considering how bad Tech’s kicking game has been.
THE FLATS – Georgia Tech running back
Jahmyr Gibbs (Dalton, Ga./Dalton) was named the second-team all-purpose back on
The Athletic’s 2020 college football freshman all-America team, which was released on Tuesday.
One of the nation’s most dynamic true freshmen, Gibbs led Georgia Tech in all-purpose yards (968) and scoring (seven TDs) and ranked second on the team in rushing yards (460), rushing touchdowns (4), receptions (3), receiving yards (303) and touchdown receptions (3), compiling the gaudy numbers in just six-and-a-half games this season. He also averaged a gaudy 25.6 yards per kickoff return (which would have ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 22
nd nationally if he had enough attempts to qualify for the NCAA’s official statistical rankings). Earlier on Tuesday, Gibbs was named an honorable-mention all-ACC selection as a return specialist.

This pun has gotten very tired… almost as tired as the concept of our defense ever getting better. - Agree or Disagree? - YankeeJacket
Ben: Disagree, I think Tech’s defense takes a decent step forward next year, if only because I don’t know that it can get worse.
Jake: Disagree, but I think it’ll get better.
Chris: I’ll still chuckle.
Jeff: Well it can only go one way from here.
