Franklin’s Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival was one of the first music fests in our area to set dates for a COVID-adjusted comeback in 2021, but others like Bonnaroo released details on their lineups first. Pilgrimage has now made its initial lineup announcement for this year’s event, which returns to the picturesque Park at Harlinsdale Farm Sept. 25-26, right on the heels of AmericanaFest. The roster includes some heavy hitters.
Jeff Coffin and Helen Gillet’s new cello/reeds duet record is both head-bopping in its meditative moments and thoughtful even when it hits a groove. Coffin, best known for his work with Dave Matthews Band, and Gillet, a true fighting, creative player on the cello, channel their inner Charles Lloyd and Charles Mingus on this record. This is an intimate recording with both players listening to each other and figuring out where each can complement the other. Coffin and Gillet make judicious use of overdubbing and looping to give some songs fullness where needed. Other songs reveal and revel in their space and starkness. “The Sun Never Says” and “Second Wings” have that quality. “Second Wings” especially has that sonority and timbre that is Gillet’s signature. A listener would not mistake it for anyone else. With a Masters Degree in Jazz from DePaul University, multiple album credits, and 20+ years of professional performances and touring under his belt, Kris has honed in on his diverse talent and applied it to the composition world as one of Chicago’s most talented and versatile session drummers, Myers has been featured in various music publications including Modern Drummer, Relix, and Rolling Stone Magazine, and was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine in 2011. In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer’s July issue.
