Families take a stand as Ofsted reinspects SEND services | Clacton and Frinton Gazette

FAMILIES desperate for their voices to be heard stood in solidarity yesterday as Ofsted begun their re-inspection into Southend’s SEND services. Ofsted is revisiting the special education needs and disabilities services offered across Southend, after their last inspection in 2018 found “significant weaknesses”. Julia Hopper - whose son Chris Nota died, aged 19 after he fell from the Queensway bridge in July 2020 - organised the demonstration outside the Civic Centre. Julia has joined around 700 families to form the Send the Right Message group, who are campaigning for improved mental health support and improvements for children with special educational needs. Julia said: “We’re exhausted but we had to come.

Southend Queensway: 'Make bridge safe now to save deaths' | Clacton and Frinton Gazette

Calls - Chris Nota and the bridge A ‘CAGE’ covering Queensway bridge won’t be built, say council bosses, despite a family’s call for safety measures after the death of a teenager. Chris Nota, 19, died after falling from the bridge in July last year, sparking a petition for the council to install a cage over the bridge to prevent any more deaths. It had 1,880 signatures. The Queensway area is due to undergo a £500million regeneration scheme that will see the underpass filled in and brought to street level but it could be years before that is complete. Ron Woodley, Independent deputy leader of Southend Council, said instead of installing a cage, the authority is working to remove the bridge as fast as possible, as part of the Better Queensway town centre transformation.
