When the pandemic hit in March, Adam Cowan, co-manager of Toronto queer bar The Beaver, says the decision to shut down was pretty inevitable and immediate.
“It was already a labour of love more than something profitable and we knew it would turn into a money pit at that point,” he says.

Ontario reported 3,328 new cases of COVID-19 on December 31, marking a new record high for the province and the first time daily cases surpassed the 3,000 mark.
The province detected a previous record high of 2,923 new cases on Wednesday, 2,553 on Tuesday and 1,939 on Monday.
The new seven-day rolling average for new cases jumped to 2,436, up from Wednesday’s average of 2,310.
“Locally, there are 888 new cases in Toronto, 431 in Peel, 418 in York Region, 257 in Windsor-Essex County and 194 in Ottawa,” Health Minister Christine Elliott wrote on Twitter.

Ontario reported 2,005 new cases of COVID-19 and 18 new deaths on December 27.
The province has also confirmed a third case of the fast-spreading coronavirus mutation in a person in Ottawa who recently travelled from the UK.
The person is now in self-isolation and a contact management investigation is underway, the government said in a statement.
On Saturday, the province announced two cases of the coronavirus variant first identified in the United Kingdom have been confirmed in a couple in Durham Region.
