Retired medics trying to help Covid vaccination drive say offers being ignored

Retired doctors and nurses desperate to help with the UK s mass vaccination drive have been kept out by bureaucracy and seen their offers of assistance ignored.
Earlier this week, The Telegraph revealed that, of the 40,000 doctors and nurses who applied to return to the service in March, 30,000 were eligible but only 5,000 had been given jobs by July.
Following the approval of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine earlier this week, the Royal College of GPs warned that the jabbing workforce would require a significant boost in order to deliver doses to vulnerable groups as quickly as possible.

The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, is in disaster medicine mode and no longer providing high standard critical care , according to a memo between clinicians.
It has more than 90 patients in adult critical care units and the number of people with Covid continues to rise rapidly , according to the message.
An email sent to staff at the hospital reportedly on Thursday, December 31 reads: We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the fact we are now in disaster medicine mode. We are no longer providing high standard critical care, because we cannot.

More than 500,000 people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 will have their second dose delayed for up to 12 weeks as the NHS rethinks the rollout that is aimed at halting the surging death toll in the UK.
In a change of policy, applying across the UK, the NHS will now prioritise administering to as many people on the priority list as possible the first dose of either the newly approved Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine or the Pfizer/BioNTech jab, so as to maximise the number of people protected against the disease.
