This man was born across from Lew Wallace
By Karen Zach, Around the County Thursday, April 22, 2021 4:00 AM • • • “A laugh, that’s all there is to life!” was the motto of our subject this week and his constant goal from his first job in the theater was to make people laugh. Wow and what an amazing job he did with that!
Born in our fair city, right across from Lew Wallace’s home, he noted: “not that it affects either of us.” He was the oldest child of three born to Julia (Peck) and William Hartman, Ferris Hartman was born probably laughing (on June 12, 1862). That activity is how he became so famous! His brother, William Wade Hartman was born in March of 1866 but passed in October of the next year. The last was sister Aletha who lightened the family in October of 1869. They would later have a half brother, as well. At age 15 months, Aletha (and Ferris, age eight) lost thei
WASHINGTON, D.C. â HR 5 (now S 393) in the Senate, known as the so-called âEquality Act,â is an assault on women and girlsâ safety and privacy. This bill would amend many federal laws by striking the word âsex,â and inserting âsex, sexual orientation, gender identity.â This amendment erases many sex-based protections for women. The Senate version states the âQâ in LGBTQ stands for âQueer,â which includes the entire universe of about 550 paraphilias outside of LGBT â one of which is pedophilia (euphemistically called âminor attracted personsâ).
Immutable biological differences and unique attributes between sexes will become illusory because birth sex is irrelevant under this bill. Biological men who subjectively assert they âidentify as a womanâ will be able to use womenâs restrooms, dressing rooms, locker rooms, and showers. Men will be legally allowed to bunk with women on overnight stays at c

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passedH.R. 5, “The Equality Act.” Three Republicans joined with every single Democrat to support the bill, which now moves to the Senate. The bill will require 60 votes to pass in the Senate, due to the filibuster. Conservatives and other Americans concerned about the act should reach out to their senators and urge them to oppose the bill.
The bill would amend federal law to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, among other things. It would expand the arenas in which non-discrimination law applies and explicitly gut religious freedom protections.
