The late Julia Reed was as prolific a cook and entertainer as she was a writer. Throughout the pages of her numerous books, she often referred to the many treasures with which she surrounded herself: an antique Chippendale sofa she inherited from her great grandmother; a spectacular set of luncheon china in a brilliant yellow hue presented to her by her uncle; portraits of birds; maps of the South; enough sterling silver to sink the Titanic.
Beginning tomorrow at 1 p.m. Neal Auction Company will present a virtual auction of Ms. Reed’s Estate to benefit her trust, which will continue her charitable work supporting organizations dedicated to education, the arts, and the betterment life in general. The auction runs through Sunday.
Southern Living editor-in-chief Sid Evans last summer, celebrated writer Julia Reed described the first holiday gathering she hosted in her Greenville, Mississippi cottage: There was lots of food, lots of booze, and lots of people I love. It s a fitting description of the Delta-born storyteller s lively approach to playing hostess something she did often and well until she passed away in August 2020, following a battle with cancer. Before she died, and in keeping with her great love for people and her philanthropic spirit, Reed established a charitable trust to continue her support of the missions and organizations she held dear.
When great private collections come to auction, even those closest to the owner tend to discover unseen treasures stashed away for decades. However, for the estate of late journalist and author Julia Reed, to be offered online in Neal Auction’s Important Winter Estates Auction February 5–7, that general truism likely won’t bear out. “Julia didn’t just like to collect things and let them gather dust. She used them all in service to her incredible hospitality and generosity,” Keith Meacham, Reed’s dear friend and a fellow Mississippi native, tells AD PRO. Consistent with her munificence, all proceeds from the sale will benefit the Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust, which partners with nonprofits to support those in need of housing, education, food, and more.
