A federal district court judge denied bail on Tuesday for two men charged with assaulting Capitol Police officers on Jan. 6, according to multiple sources.
Judge Thomas Hogan ruled that Julian Khater and George Tanios will remain in prison until their scheduled court dates after allegedly spraying three police officers, including Officer Brian Sicknick, with bear and pepper spray, according to court documents. Hogan said there is evidence that the two suspects pose a potential threat to their communities, according to The Hill.
“Both [the defendants’] history and characteristics do not weight in favor of detention, but they still committed this attack on uniformed police officers, and I don’t find a way around that,” the judge said, according to The Hill.

Calling them threats to the community, U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan denied pretrial release for George Tanios and Julian Khater. They were charged in the assault of Sicknick, who grew up in South River and died after defending the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
According to the FBI, Tanios and Khater, who no longer live in New Jersey, know each other and grew up together in the New Brunswick area.
Hogan said the assault with chemical spray on Sicknick and two other officers contributed to the mob’s ability to breach the police line that had been guarding the Capitol.
Capitol rioters accused of assaulting Officer Brian Sicknick denied pre-trial release Dave Goldiner
The two men charged with assaulting Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick during the Jan. 6 insurrection will remain behind bars while they await trial, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan denied pre-trial release for accused rioters George Tanios and Julian Khater, who are charged with using bear spray to attack Sicknick and other cops as a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.
The judge called it “difficult” to keep the two men in jail, despite conceding that video evidence left “little doubt” about the suspects’ roles in attacking Sicknick, 42, who later died.
