PORTLAND, Ore. Nearly one year after a Gresham police officer shot and killed Israel Berry in Southeast Portland, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced plans to present the case to a grand jury.
Schmidt appointed Samuel Kauffman, a private practice attorney in Portland to serve as co-lead prosecutor in the case, according to Brent Weisberg, a spokesperson for the DA’s office.

PORTLAND, Ore. On the same night thousands of protesters marched through Portland calling for police accountability after the death of George Floyd, a Gresham police officer shot and killed a man.
The May 31, 2020 shooting of Israel Berry in Southeast Portland barely made headlines. Few details were released at the time.
West, DiSpirito earn Maine Campus Compact awards
Bailey West, the University of Maineâs 2021 valedictorian from Stockton Springs, and Dominique DiSpirito, a junior from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, both earned the Maine Campus Compactâs 2021 Heart and Soul Student award.
The award, one of five administered by the Maine Campus Compact, recognizes six Maine undergraduate students who are actively involved in transforming their campuses and communities into environments of civic engagement. According to the organization, these students have developed positive community and campus change, worked to institutionalize their community projects, demonstrated leadership and implemented innovative approaches to social issues.
