Victorville Daily Press The Pine Fire burning near Piñon Hills grew to 450 acres and destroyed at least one structure Wednesday night as hundreds of firefighters from multiple agencies worked  into the evening to strengthen containment lines, officials said. More than 200 firefighters were still working on the fire as of Thursday morning. Firefighters are once again battling high temperatures, low relative humidity, gusty winds with extremely dry vegetation, authorities said. Based on yesterday s observed fire activity and weather, the potential for significant fire growth still exists. Temperatures in the area are expected to peak in the high 80s with 10 to 15 mph winds in the afternoon and gusts of up to 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Range of new facilities in the offing at Workington s UTC

New plans are in place for new facilities A Workington Technical College is to undergo extensive expansions after the borough council gave proposals the green light. Under a vision outlined to Allerdale Borough Council , Energy Coast University Technical College (UTC) will look to add a range of new facilities including large new build teaching accommodation and six new external teaching and work bays. Furthermore, plans also include provision for a new sports pitch and changing pavilion, with new pedestrian crossing to be set out at nearby Jubilee Road, connecting the two sites. Energy Coast University Technical College (UTC) currently provides academic, practical and technical education for pupils aged between 14 and 19 years old. UTC opened in September 2014 and delivers academic and technical engineering education and training on-site and within nearby premises.

Readers react to traffic chaos near school

Readers have shared their views over traffic problems on a busy school road have been described as “absolute hell” and “complete carnage” by two leading councillors. Mayor of Whitehaven, Brian O’Kane and councillor Carl Walmsley are among those to voice concerns over the amount of traffic in the Red Lonning area, near Campus Whitehaven, which houses St Benedict’s Catholic High School and Mayfield School. The road is gridlocked during peak times and Coun Walmsley fears there will soon be a serious accident. Coun O’Kane says the situation is also a “complete nightmare” for residents living on the nearby estates.
