With the new year comes a new yearlong, weekly historical drama series from Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK. This year’s is “Seiten o Tsuke,” which is about Shibusawa Eiichi, often called the father of Japanese capitalism, one of the most important figures of the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and the man who founded the first bank in Japan based on joint stock ownership. Shibusawa’s face will grace the new ¥10,000 bills.
He is being played by Ryo Yoshizawa, who turns 27 on Feb. 1. Yoshizawa first gained popularity in 2011, when he was still a teenager, on the superhero TV show “Kamen Rider Fourze,” and became known to a wider audience with the 2018 theatrical film “River’s Edge,” for which he received the newcomer’s award from the judges of the Japan Academy Film Prize. Jun Matsumoto, a member of popular Japanese boy band Arashi that went on hiatus from New Year s Day, has been cast for the leading role in NHK s yearlong period drama for 2023, the public broadcaster said. Dosuru Ieyasu (What to do, Ieyasu) about Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, will also mark the first time Matsumoto has starred in NHK s annual Taiga (big river) period drama series that began in 1963.

Fans in and outside Japan have taken to social media with messages and videos of gratitude for popular Japanese boy band Arashi, which went on hiatus from New Year s Day on Friday.
The five-member group, which made its debut in 1999, bid a temporary farewell on New Year s Eve as it held a virtual live concert while also appearing on Japan s annual year-end music extravaganza on public broadcaster NHK. There was no audience at either event due to the coronavirus pandemic. When times get rough and you are troubled, music will always be by your side. When you re sad, please listen to the (songs of) Arashi, Jun Matsumoto, one of the group s members, said during the livestreaming concert from 8 p.m. at Tokyo Dome.
