Serious crime drops in Juneau in 2020

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Preliminary figures for the crime rate in Juneau during 2020 so far are in. Police Chief Ed Mercer said on  Action Line that they have witnessed a decline in Part One crimes, the more serious type crimes such as murder, burglary, thefts, and sexual assaults. The chief said there s been a 28 percent decline in those cases, although sexual assaults increased by 22 percent, which amounted to four more cases than the previous year. And the chief said thefts are higher yet than he would like to see.

Superbear robber gets prison term

Ronald Wheat was convicted on a charge of robbery in the second degree. The sentence was handed down by Superior Court Judge Amy Mead. Wheat was spotted inside the store shoplifting and was confronted outside the store employees. Juneau Police said Wheat fought with employees in the parking lot. One employee suffered a minor injury.

Juneau man receives six years for drug shipment

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Daryl Anders pled guilty to felony charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree and attempted misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree. Anders was sentenced to 10 years in prison with four years suspended and four years probation. He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Amy Mead. Anders blamed the arrest on a drug addiction that has lasted for 35 years. Authorities said they intercepted a package in the 400 block of 2nd Street in July that contained $49,000 worth of illegal drugs like heroin and methamphetamine.

Black Ice causes accident

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - CBJ crews were out working this morning to make sure roads were safe for your morning commute after reports of black ice on local roads. CCFR responded to a vehicle that slid off the road near Twin Lakes. The driver was transported for non-life-threatening injuries. CCFR also responded to a single-vehicle roll-over accident on Fritz Cove Road. One patient was transported as a precaution. Juneau Police said conditions were bad early today and they encouraged drivers to take it slow, use extreme caution, and budget a little extra time for their ride to work.

Man arrested on outstanding warrants and other charges following fight

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A fight downtown on South Franklin Street before six Wednesday evening resulted in an arrest. Juneau Police arrested 23-year-old Jacob Bryon Bean on two $100 JPD warrants.  He was also charged with resisting arrest, interfering with and assaulting a police officer, and violating conditions of release. Bean was jailed at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
