LPD gearing up for the Junior Police Academy

(WLFI) The Lafayette Police Department is gearing up for the Junior Police Academy. This three-day program aims to educate young people about the responsibilities of police. This will include criminal investigation, K9 Units, and defensive/physical tactics. The class is available to kids ages 12 to 14 in Tippecanoe County. There is a $25 fee per participant which covers a shirt, daily lunch, snacks, and graduation certificate. School Resource Officer Mark Roberts says this academy is for those who have shown interest in law enforcement or community service.

May 5, 2021 at 5:30 am Officer Blake Ragocos was recently honored by the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai‘i as Officer of the Month for February 2021. As the only School Resource Officer in the Hāmākua District, Officer Ragocos is responsible for law-related counseling, education, and law enforcement working with school staff to create a safe environment.  He also works with the Junior Police Officer program at a nearby elementary school, conducting safety presentations to kindergarten students and making home visits to students with attendance and grade issues.  When COVID-19 prevented students from returning to class, Officer Ragocos created videos of safety skits. He also provided online lessons about drug abuse resistance education that were well received by students and teachers alike.

Officials: Bastrop first responders injured suspected drunk driver

A suspected drunk driver hit and injured a pair of Bastrop first responders while they investigated a crash Thursday evening on Texas 71, according to the city of Bastrop. Assistant Fire Chief Eric DeArmitt sustained a “serious bodily injury which will require ongoing care,” and police Sgt. Charles Sanford sustained a minor injury while investigating the crash at about 6 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of West Texas 71, the city said in an announcement late Friday. While DeArmitt and Sanford investigated the inital crash, another motorist, identified as 53-year-old Kenneth Crawford of Bastrop County, abruptly entered the crash scene driving a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, officials said.
