황선우는 남자 자유형 50ｍ, 100ｍ, 200ｍ와 계영 800ｍ 등 경영 4개 세부 종목에 출전한다. 그의 주 종목은 자유형 200m. 지난 5월 국가대표 선발전 남자 자유형 200m에서 1분44초96으로 주니어 세계 기록을 썼다. 올 시즌 세계 5위에 해당한다. 황선우는 “1분44초대 기록이라면 올림픽 메달이 더는 꿈이 아니다. 메달을 딸 수도 있다”며 기뻐했다. 대한체육회는 도쿄올림픽 개막식 기수로 ‘배구 여제’ 김연경과 황선우를 선정했다.
