Credit: St Albans Lib Dems The leader of Hertfordshire County Council has lost his seat after the 2021 local election results were announced. Conservative leader David Williams was narrowly beaten by Liberal Democrat candidate Paul de Kort in Harpenden North East. Although the Conservatives were able to retain a large majority on the county council, Mr Williams defeat will come as huge blow to the party. Mr Williams, who is also chairman of the national County Councils Network, polled 2,022 votes which was lower than Mr de Kort s 2,063. Herts County Council leaders react to High Court ruling

He said it is “unreasonable” of the government not to have made parliamentary time to legislate, to allow remote meetings to continue while COVID was a risk, and he hopes the Secretary of State would bring forward parliamentary time to do so. Cllr Giles-Medhurst also pointed to those councillors who will be wary about returning to face to face meetings – and to the ‘huge’ extra costs of making premises ‘safe’.

PROTECTING  jobs and services, building a stronger economy and protecting the environment are among the priorities being put forward by Labour candidates in Hertfordshire, in the run-up to the county council elections on May 6. The priorities are include in the Party’s 28-page manifesto, which sets out a vision for a Labour-run Hertfordshire County Council. According to the manifesto, a Labour administration would review all county council contracts with external organisations within the first year – making in-house service delivery the first choice. It would work to ensure external contracts were awarded to local companies and insist those with council contracts pay a ‘real Living Wage’.
