BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) A group of Chinese researchers recently have finished the genome map of the Meishan pig, a famous Chinese domestic pig breed, laying a foundation for the protection, development and utilization of local pig provenance resources in China. A research team from Institute of Animal Sciences, affiliated to Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, recently drew a high-quality genome map of the Meishan pig, also currently the most accurate genome map for Asian domestic pig breeds, Science and Technology Daily reported. The genome map records 2.51 billion base pairs of genes and annotates 22,074 coding genes. Genomic comparison between Meishan and Duroc pigs, a popular European pig breed, reveals 49,103 structural variations, 4.02 percent of which are Asian-specific.
