The difficulty of winning back-to-back games on the road was not lost on the Stony Brook men’s basketball team, especially given their inexperience. With a pair of victories against the Binghamton Bearcats on Dec. 19 and 20, the Seawolves opened the conference slate with an affirming sweep to improve to 4-4 (2-0 AE), following a Saturday blowout with a Sunday nailbiter that went into overtime.
“[The sweep] was important,” redshirt-sophomore forward Frankie Policelli said in a postgame press conference. “It shows that we can mentally prepare for both days and that we won’t lapse. This is just one series. We have a lot more. We’ve just got to keep on doing all the right stuff.”

Tyler Bertram had 12 points for the Bearcats (0-4, 0-1), who have now lost four games in a row to start the season. Christian Hinckson added nine rebounds. Stony Brook matches up against Binghamton on the road on Sunday. Binghamton looks for its first win against Stony Brook at home on Sunday.

The Stony Brook men’s basketball team remains undefeated at their home confines of Island Federal Arena this season, as the Seawolves thoroughly beat up on an NAIA opponent, the Point Park Pioneers, by a score of 83-39 on Tuesday, Dec. 15 in their final game before the start of America East Conference play, improving to 2-4.
“Today was good because we got to get a little confidence and feel good about ourselves,” head coach Geno Ford said in a postgame press conference. “We played good teams on the road. We haven’t won those games, and so what happens is, guys start to get a little down. That’s human nature. I think we’ve been trying to battle through it. So getting a win here, going into conference [play], I think is a positive for us.”

Having seemingly stymied the Bryant Bulldogs with a defensive zone, it appeared as if the Stony Brook men’s basketball team was on its way to victory after dropping two in a row to St. John’sand Hofstra. Instead, a second-half lead vanished and the Seawolves dropped their third straight, 81-72, on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Chace Athletic Center in Smithfield, Rhode Island, falling to 1-4 on the season.
“I thought we played with a lot of intensity in the middle part of the game,” head coach Geno Ford said in a postgame press conference. “[We] got off to a slow start, were able to wrestle the lead back by halftime, and then in the second half had a nice lead, and it just kind of unraveled. We couldn’t stop the bleeding.”
