NKANDLA, South Africa (AP) Former South African president Jacob Zuma left his home late Wednesday night to turn himself in to authorities to serve a 15-month prison term, his foundation has confirmed.

Der frühere südafrikanische Präsident Jacob Zuma hat sich den Behörden wegen seiner Haftstrafe gestellt. Kurz vor dem Ablauf einer Frist am Mittwochabend verließ er sein Haus in Nkandla. „Präsident Zuma hat entschieden, sich an die Inhaftierungsanordnung zu halten“, teilte die Zuma Foundation bei Twitter mit. Die Polizei bestätigte, dass er bei ihr eingetroffen sei.

Supporters of the ex-president had been trying to prevent his arrest
Former South African president Jacob Zuma was in police custody on Thursday after handing himself over to authorities to begin a 15-month prison term.
The veteran leader had faced a midnight deadline for officers to arrest him after judges ruled he should go to jail for contempt of court.
The country s highest court handed Zuma the prison term after he ignored a judicial ruling ordering him to appear before a commission investigating alleged corruption during his time in office from 2009 to 2018.
