In 1933, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin had ones, but due to the looming war they eventually all closed. It wasn’t until 1945 and Gordon Mirams, a film writer (and later Aotearoa’s chief censor), rose to prominence with his book Speaking Candidly: Films and People in New Zealand, that a public meeting was called to establish the re-born Wellington Film Institute (now society).
