However, Shore Capital retail analyst Greg Lawless warned that an online-only operation could hit Debenhams’ beauty sales. He said: “The big question in beauty is whether the big beauty brands – Clinique and Channel – will remain with Boohoo longer term. “The Debenhams number one position in premium beauty was predicated on counter sales, which will not form part of this acquisition.” In hints that it intends to take on the might of Amazon, Boohoo said it would create the UK’s largest marketplace across fashion, beauty, sport and homeware – expanding the range of products sold via Debenhams marketplace by maintaining current third-party relationships and expanding further.

The administrators of Debenhams UK, FRP Advisory, have confirmed that boohoo group plc has signed an agreement to buy the Debenhams brands and websites but all UK stores are to close permanently. Boohoo group plc has paid £55million to acquire the global rights to the Debenhams brand and other business assets including all in-house brands and websites; which will take full effect following completion of the current stock liquidation programme which continues online. Once Debenhams stores are able to reopen when lockdown lifts and the stock liquidation can continue in stores – the website will be operated by boohoo.

The company bought Debenhams website and brand as part of a £55million deal that will see the department store relaunch as an online-only operation from next year according to reports in The Sun.
This means that the remaining 118 stores will shut - with a loss of 12,000 jobs.

Debenhams announced its business would be wound down in December 2020 - they then confirmed a few weeks ago that six stores including it s the flagship on Oxford Street will permanently close.
Currently, retailer s stores have been empty due to the ongoing Lockdown regulations as part of the Coronavirus pandemic, but shoppers can still purchase goods on its website.
