The late-December announcement of a five-year funding enhancement for Ontario s racetracks has been welcomed by horsepeople in the Peterborough area for the stability it brings to Kawartha Downs.
On Thursday (Jan. 7), Infrastructure minister and Haliburton Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP Laurie Scott confirmed the funding enhancement, which insures all of Ontario s 15 racetracks can continue to race through the COVID-19 pandemic. The deal also insures that Kawartha Downs casino can continue to operate for the next five years.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Walworth County Commission, incoming Commissioner and former Sheriff Duane Mohr used the public forum time to acknowledge Sheriff Josh Boll’s recent swearing in by Chief Justice Gilbertson as the new President of the South Dakota Sheriff’s Association.
The commissioners voted 3 to 2 to revise the county employee handbook for travel compensation, which will now read “Travel expenses and per diem rates will only be reimbursed when it requires an overnight stay.” Commissioner Jim Houck, who voted against the motion, said this revision is directed at the Sheriff’s transport officers.
