DOWN IN THE D: Three of my favourite pro sports teams are located within a few blocks of one another in downtown Detroit. All are in various forms of restoration Detroit Lions of the National Football League, Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League, and Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball. All together, progress is being made and there is credible cause for optimism with regards to the Lions, Red Wings and Tigers. For one, all three teams now have sensible leaders in charge. With new general manager Brad Holmes and new head coach Dan Campbell at the helm, the Lions are coming off of a recent NFL draft that experts are saying ranks as one of the best in the entire league.

The Pirates are off today and open a three-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field tomorrow night.
Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk says Ke’Bryan Hayes has not experienced any discomfort in his injured left wrist as he’s taken soft swings this week. Hayes has missed more than a month since injuring the wrist on a swing in the first inning of the second game of the season, in Chicago.
Starting pitcher Chad Kuhl threw a side session yesterday as he works on returning from a sore shoulder. Tomczyk says the next step is to throw a simulated game, if Kuhl does not have any soreness from yesterday’s activity.

Good morning!
Each year about 20,000 thoroughbred foals are registered by owners who dream that three years hence their horse will be the chosen one to win the Kentucky Derby. The dream resumes today with the 147th Run for the Roses.
