Approximately 80 people gathered at 7:30 p.m., April 16, in front of the Kalamazoo County Courthouse, five days after Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by a white police officer during a traffic stop April 11, in suburban Minneapolis. “We are so tired,” Ryan Singleton (who goes by King Ryan) said. “We are mourning, and you can’t tell us how to mourn. We are mourning to be Black in America and to be constantly be in a state of mourning.”

Kalamazoo will close temporary warming shelter Sunday as temperatures rise Updated Feb 19, 2021; Facebook Share KALAMAZOO, MI The temporary warming shelter nears the Mills Street homeless encampment will be closed at noon Sunday, Feb. 21. The warming shelter is not needed as temperatures will not longer meet criteria for extreme weather, according to a news release from the city of Kalamazoo. The shelter will be taken down beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, the release said. The warming shelter was constructed during the first week of February in response to single-digit temperatures, with wind chills registering below zero. The shelter had the capacity to accommodate 60 people, the release said.
