Tomorrow is the date in 1863 that William Randolph Hearst was born.  Most folks may not remember him now, but he was a big force in American journalism, and a flashy millionaire.
His father, George Hearst, was a miner who struck gold, and became a United States senator and a millionaire. When his son, William, was in his 20s, George bought the San Francisco Examiner newspaper and gave it to his son to play with.
William became a big shot newspaper owner, but he must not have looked the part when he started out. He wrote to Ambrose Bierce, a well-known writer, about becoming a columnist, and arranged a visit.

On Donald Trumpâs last day as president, the U. S. administration announced sanctions against a guy named Alessandro Bazzoni because he was trying to evade United States sanctions on Venezuelaâs oil sector.    Â
And suddenly, Alessandro Bazzoni who owns the Dulce Gusto pizza shop in Verona, Italy, found his bank accounts blocked by the U. S. government.   The U. S. Treasury Department has now straightened things out. But the problem obviously was mistaken identity. Folks in Washington didnât think there could possibly be two guys named Alessandro Bazzoni.

I sympathize with Signor Bazzoni. I donât know how many times somebody has asked me what is my real name. Most folks seem to think that Smart is an unusual last name.
We just observed another annual April Foolâs Day, and it occurred to me that I didnât know why such a tradition exists. A little research found that nobody really seems to know why, although the idea has existed for several hundred years, by many different cultures.
Some historian try to connect the day of jokes with the early festival of Hilaria which was celebrated in ancient Rome at the end of March by members of the cult of Cvbele, a nature goddess of ancient of Asia Minor. She was adopted by some Romans who dressed up in disguises on her day and played jokes on fellow citizens.
