Jan. 8 A bill introduced this week in the Florida Legislature would overturn three laws recently passed by Key West voters to limit cruise tourism to the city.
The so-called preemption bill filed by state Sen. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, would retroactively prohibit local governments from regulating seaport business, including restricting a vessel s type or size. In November, more than 60% of Key West voters decided to ban cruise ships with a capacity of more than 1,300 people from docking in the city, and to limit the number of cruise visitors who can disembark each day to 1,500.
Last night’s Yucca Valley Town Council meeting was host to the Mayor’s State of the Town Address, as well as an update on the youth commission. Reporter Joshua King has more details…
The meeting began with the State of the Town Address, which mayor Jeff Drozd kept light with a game of Yucca Valley Trivial Pursuit throughout. In his speech, he thanked essential workers and emergency servicemembers, called attention to the year’s list of completed public works projects, and promoted the theme of resilience.
Following that, Merl Abel was elected as the new mayor and Jim Schooler was elected as the mayor pro tem.
