KINGSTON, R.I. – May 5, 2021 – The answers to many of life’s mysteries have been discovered far below the surface of the seas. However, getting to those depths has not been easy.
Thanks to a new fiber optic reel system invented by Brennan Phillips, an assistant professor of ocean engineering at the University of Rhode Island, deep-sea exploration is about to get much more affordable and accessible.

A month has gone by since the Ever Given the 1,300-foot cargo ship that ran aground and blocked for nearly a week one of the busiest waterways in the world was freed. But for many industries, the ripple effects will continue to batter global supply chains for weeks to come, absent having in place a sound supply chain risk management program.

MARION – As you’ve probably heard many times, things have a way of working out. Well, they did, and they have, for Samantha McCurdy.
“As a kid, I was actually kind of a troublemaker,” McCurdy began her story, with a grin. “I’m sure my parents would agree. I did, however, want to be a veterinarian from a very young age. I love animals! But when I found out I would also have to put animals to sleep, that quickly ruined my dream of being a vet.”
“Right after high school,” she continued, “I almost went to cosmetology school, but instead I began working in a few factories over the next 4-5 years. But I didn’t feel like that was my calling. Yes, I was paying my bills, but I wanted to do more.”
