Some destinations on the current list that would typically be popular holiday options, including Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, are not welcoming travellers so inclusion on the Green List doesn t automatically mean UK tourists can go there.
Of the destinations that are accepting tourists, Portugal and Iceland seem the most likely picks for a holiday. But let s not forget the island destinations deemed Green by the UK authorities. Other than Gibraltar, which is a peninsula rather than an island, you d be hard-pressed to find any of these locations listed among the world s most-visited places.

Gibraltar, Iceland, Israel and Portugal have all been given green list status

Green. A compelling, persuasive colour. Symbolic of so much. Of rebirth and renewal. Of growth. Of advancement and forward motion. Of that basic instruction to go, and go now. Certainly, all these connotations ring true, now the government has finally announced its “green list” of countries that are officially sanctioned as safe destinations for British tourists in the coming months. The announcement had been much promised – but had been notably light on detail – for several weeks. Now, at last, we have it; a tally of places that we can consider for holidays from today, May 17. Let summer commence.

I’ve been looking forward to this all week, and it’s a pleasant trip on the scooter down to Camp Bay with the sun slowly sinking behind the hills of Algeciras, turning Jbel Musa in Morocco differing shades of red as if by an unseen hand from a celestial paintbox, as the lights of Tanger Med wink at us as if in acknowledgment from across a short sea strait.
There are those who haven’t booked tables are having their own opening nights by the rocks on the shore with their barbecues jostling for culinary superiority. Others, myself included, sit by the shore and just soak in the view as Levanter Breeze start up with some really chilled tunes. I’m listening to a tune that’s pretty much in sympathy with the beautiful sunset entitled ‘Mackerel Sky.’ These guys are seriously good and well respected local musicians who incorporate a fusion of Arab and traditional Andalucian rhythms into their mus
