STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) - Staunton’s Arbor Day roots date back to 1889. It was the city’s first major tree planting in Gypsy Hill Park. It’s a legacy that continues still today with a message they are trying to pass on to future generations.
Staunton City Schools and Shenandoah Green together hosted a tree-planting ceremony at Dixon Educational Center Friday.
The Heifitz International Music Institute gave a special performance, Reverend Edward Scott shared a word, and Staunton Schools Superintendent Garett Smith read a story, but the stars of the day’s festivities were Staunton’s youngest learners - its preschoolers.

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - There’ll once again be relief on those hot summer days in the Shenandoah Valley, as people are working hard to get pools ready for Memorial Day weekend.
The coronavirus pandemic kept public pools in Staunton and Waynesboro closed in 2020, but not this year.
“It’s been a crazy year, but we’re glad to offer some kind of normalcy again,” Staunton Aquatics Manager Ryan Flippo said.

Staunton City Council will issue a proclamation this week declaring April 30 as Arbor Day. Council will also celebrate Staunton again being honored as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation, the fulfillment of two grant awards, and the launching of a new interactive tree tour.
The Tree City USA program recognizes municipalities that have active tree planting, tree care, and tree preservation programs, with this being the 25th year Staunton has been awarded the title.
