Who is Sarla Thukral? All you need to know about India s first woman pilot

Google celebrates India s first woman pilot, Sarla Thukral s 107th birthday with Google Doodle

Sarla Thakral was India’s first ever woman to take to the skies. She got an ‘A’ grade license after 1,000 hours of flying, making history as she was the first one to do so. She was just 21 when she got her aviation license and in the same year she flew the Gypsy Moth (an aeroplane named after the insect). She goes down in our history as a badass woman who chased her ambitions, was obsessed with the high skies and would let nothing coming in the way of her journey.

Just stopping to get gas in Marstons Mills

Just stopping to get gas in Marstons Mills Barbara Clark Back in 1930, a single-engine DeHavilland Gipsy Moth aircraft stopped off for a refill at the Cash Market in Marstons Mills. There were no refueling capabilities at the Marstons Mills Airfield at that time, and though it’s not known exactly what brought the biplane in for a landing there, in order to fly out again, the plane had to be towed to the market to be gassed up. A vintage photo taken at the scene appears on T-shirts and hoodies being sold locally to raise money for the Marstons Mills Historical Society.

Progress in the Parks: Buggy about Bugs

Progress in the Parks: Buggy about Bugs Clint Dalbom Parks Superintendent One day this past spring I was in the Neosho Parks Department Office doing weekly paperwork when I received a telephone call. The young man on the other end of the line identified himself as an employee of Missouri Department of Agriculture and was asking if it would be okay if he hung a couple emerald ash borer traps in Morse Park along Hickory Creek. Much of my career with the Missouri Department of Conservation I worked with different insect outbreaks or population surveys of one type or another. Most of the traps that I have dealt with are usually small and mostly inconspicuous, usually going unnoticed by most citizens. Traps like the bright orange Gypsy Moth traps that have been placed around Missouri for many years occasionally draw a few questions, but for the most part they go unnoticed.
