And I, by some feat of amnesia, am just now realizing I haven t newsletter-ed you since 2020.  I ve been thrown off my weekly newsletter game. My cycle is out of whack. And it seems I m not alone.  From a gush of early-winter restaurant openings, to the fall of chains and the rise of independent concepts   nothing is as it usually is in the food world.

We hoped it would be better by now.  Those who like to travel and dine out prayed and wished things would look different in 2021. Not quite. Many restaurants still operate under reduced capacity. Many consumers are still skittish about dining indoors. And travel to foreign destinations for pleasure is still on hold. Part of the fun of discovering new places includes discovering the local foods and wines. The pandemic may be grounding travel but it’s not grounding imagination. We can still feel like we re getting away, and the growing diversity in Southwest Florida s restaurant scene is making it easier.

Annual Taste of the Islands winners announced By CROW - | Dec 23, 2020 PHOTO PROVIDED The Old Captiva House won Taste of the Taste and Best Seafood Dish. The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife announced the winners of its 39th Taste of the Islands. This year’s “Reimagined” event featured 31 restaurants from Sanibel and Captiva that diners visited throughout November. Local judges Harold Balink, Gina Birch, Karen Feldman, Jarred Harris, Gloria Jordan, Norman Love, Patrick Nolan, and Geoff and Robbie Roepstorff, along with surprise celebrity guest judge Keegan Gerhard of the Food Network, rated the restaurants’ offerings in a variety of categories while passport holders voted for the People’s Choice award, sponsored by Rosier Insurance.
