JASPER COUNTY â Two Wheatfield men were arrested and charged with aggravated battery and other offenses after they allegedly bloodied another man at a residence near Wheatfield on May 1.
Charged were Arthur R. Burchett, 41, and Kenneth M. Sorba, 52, after Jasper County Sheriffâs Department deputies responded to an incident at a residence three miles southeast of Wheatfield at around 10:34 p.m. on a Saturday evening.
According to police, a caller advised JCSD that a man had been beaten and bloodied during an altercation. When deputies arrived, they saw blood streaming down the victimâs face.
While waiting for an ambulance, the victim told deputies that when he pulled his car into his driveway he was immediately cornered by Burchett and three other subjects.
Jasper County Jail Commander Justin Burkhart appreciates a comfortable jail. For years, this rural Indiana correctional facility struggled to keep deputies, staff, and inmates warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and pay energy bills that soared to more than $25,000 a month.
“It got so cold we had to issue inmates extra blankets and sweatshirts and so hot we had to add plug-in fans. We got a lot of complaints,” he said.
Fortunately, there are no complaints now. The Jasper County Jail, Jasper County Commissioners, and local dignitaries were joined by Trane Technologies and Solential Energy for a Green Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at the facility’s new solar system and energy system overhaul. The project has corrected problems that have existed since the jail was built in 2007 and created the opportunity to cut monthly energy costs in half.
