STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A Harlem man accused of viciously beating an Asian man in Manhattan had previously been convicted in an assault-related case on Staten Island in 1998, according to the New York Daily News.
Jarrod Powell, 49, is now facing attempted murder and assault-as-a-hate-crime charges in the beating of Yao Pan Ma near E. 125th St., the report says.
Ma is in critical condition and in a medically induced coma, the News reported.
Powell was released on parole in 2000 after serving two years in prison on the Staten Island attempted assault conviction, according to the report.

NEW YORK (AP) â A man has been arrested in a brutal assault on a Chinese immigrant who was kicked repeatedly in the head in East Harlem.
Police said Jarrod Powell has been charged with two counts of felony assault in Fridayâs attack on 61-year-old Yao Pan Ma.
