Driving past swaths of farmland and a handful of baseball fields, those passing by this small county airport may never suspect that its runways and aircraft hangars might have the power to attract serious economic growth.
But that s the hope of local and county officials who see Delaware Coastal Airport as a key part of the continued development in Sussex County – both commercial and residential growth that seems to be spreading west into towns like Georgetown.
Gene Dvornick, Georgetown’s town manager, said he has seen the Route 9 corridor transform from picturesque farmland to housing developments – and that housing continues to move west, “slowly marching toward Georgetown.”

Georgetown Mayor Bill West, Town Manager Gene Dvornick and Police Chief R.L. Hughes recently announced a new online crime-mapping program available immediately to residents as a tool to keep track of crime within the town.
West said, “This is one additional means for the town to help keep the public informed.”
Dvornick said Georgetown is joining several other municipal agencies in making crime data available online. Dover, Milford, Newark, Smyrna and Wilmington currently have information available at CrimeMapping.com. Eventually, there will be a direct link on the town’s website.
Hughes feels strongly that this is another step in making the Georgetown Police Department a model, 21st century policing organization. He said it will further the department’s efforts to be transparent and accountable to citizens.
