To the Editor:
I was pleased to see Jason Zinoman acknowledge âHarpo Speaks!,â by Harpo Marx, as the gold standard of the comedian memoir (Feb. 21). As a teenager in the early â60s, I got my hands on the book and found it to be thoroughly entertaining.
Particularly enjoyable is the chapter about Harpoâs trip to Russia in the fall of 1933. He ended up spending eight weeks there and put on shows that earned him standing ovations. Posters that announced his appearances, written in Cyrillic, spelled his name XAPIIO MAPKC. Harpo had no idea how to pronounce it, so he called himself âExapno Mapcase, the Toast of Moscow.â
