Health rights activists are demanding an unconditional apology from the police for teargassing patients in a hospital ward in Neno.

The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) is demanding an apology from the Malawi Police Service over the disruption of health services at Neno District Hospital where police fired at people seeking medical attention and health workers.
The incident was as a result of running battles between the law enforcers and the communities.
According to MHEN Executive Director George Jobe, the police fired teargas through the main window of a male ward and also a few metres away from a Covid 19 isolation center which was at the time occupied by two patients who were on oxygen ventilators.

This follows public calls that despite making it mandatory for everyone to be wearing face masks, some people keep giving excuses that they cannot afford to buy masks.
In a memo which has seen and has been signed by Siphiwe Mauwa for Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, the funds have been disbursed to all district councils to buy masks to be distributed to communities.
Meanwhile, George Jobe one of the country’s health rights activist has hailed government for the gesture saying this will go a long way in ensuring strict adherence to the order for people to wear masks in public.
Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera has introduced new lockdown measures to contain a jump in confirmed cases and deaths from COVID-19. The restrictions include school closures, a night-time curfew, and no gatherings over 50 people.
The measure comes five days after Chakwera declared a state of national disaster in response to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.
The new measures, he said, are being enacted because the situation is getting worse in the second wave of the pandemic.
“This year alone, a total of 5,091 people have tested positive for Covid-19 across the country.
