Family releases new tribute to firefighter Guy Tadman

The family of Guy Tadman, a former Trowbridge firefighter who served his local community for over 22 years, have released a touching tribute. Guy, who dedicated his life to helping other people, died on 29 April, after a long fight against acute myeloid leukaemia. Although born in Birmingham, Guy grew up in Semington and went to school at George Ward in Melksham. His first jobs were in architecture, first working on building conversions for the newly disabled and then using the software Auto CAD to help design grain silos and shopping centres. He originally applied to Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service on a whim, only realising it was a real career option when he reached the interview stage. Having been successful in his application, he joined the Service in September 1998, undertaking his basic training in Eastleigh, Hampshire alongside colleagues who he then worked alongside for more than 20 years.

Mary Ann Cotton | Biography, Murders, Trial, & Execution

Mary Ann grew up in Durham county, northeastern England. According to some sources, she left home at age 16 to work as a nurse but returned three years later and became a dressmaker. In 1852 she married William Mowbray, and over the next decade or so, the couple had eight or nine children. (The lack of documentation such as birth and death certificates leaves many details of Mary Ann’s life open to dispute.) After moving frequently, the family settled in Hendon, Durham county, in about 1856. At some point William took out a life insurance policy that covered both him and their three surviving children; the others had died from “gastric fever,” a common ailment that had symptoms similar to arsenic poisoning. Gastric fever also claimed William’s life in 1864 and the lives of two other children soon afterward. Mary Ann received the insurance money, and she then left her daughter in the care of her mother.
