SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) - Chinese budget phone maker Honor has signed partnerships with major chip suppliers such as Intel and Qualcomm after being spun off from under-fire parent Huawei Technologies in a bid to save it last year, it said on Friday.
Huawei had sold Honor to a consortium of 30 of the sub-brand s agents and dealers in November to help it resume sourcing components restricted by U.S. sanctions. As Chief Executive George Zhao launched its first phone model since the split, Honor said in a statement it now has its own deals with some tech firms. These include AMD, MediaTek, Micron Technology, Microsoft, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Sony.

Shanghai, China, Jan 22 (EFE).- Honor, the smartphone manufacturing company that recently split from Huawei to minimize the impact of United States sanction against the Chinese tech giant, on Friday said it had signed contracts with some of the largest US chipmakers.
In a statement on its website after launching its latest flagship phone, View40, Honor claimed it had “the flexibility and independence to choose the best solutions for its global supply chain.”
According to the statement, the company has signed contracts with Intel and Qualcomm, apart from other international tech firms such as Microsoft, AMD, Sony, Samsung, MediaTek and SK Hynix.

After US imposed sanctions on Huawei to do business with American companies, Huawei and Honor branded smartphones were finding it hard to sustain in the competitive smartphone world. In a move to keep the ship floating, Honor brand parted ways with the parent company to establish an independent identity and keep the show going on. It seems the move is paying off as the major chipset players including Qualcomm and Intel are now ready to partner with Honor for the new line of smartphones.

Honor just unveiled the V40 5G smartphone, marking its new beginning as a properly independent company. Following the announcement, the CEO George Zhao announced his team has signed partnerships with major chip suppliers MediaTek and Qualcomm.
On top of that, it has also struck deals with AMD, Intel, Micron, Microsoft, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Sony,

George Zhao commented the last five months have been “an extremely difficult but meaningful time for Honor”. The company felt expectations from partners and consumers as it is aiming to shake off the Huawei aftertaste. In its new venture, Honor will aim to move into the middle- and high-tier market and expand its overseas presence.
Device maker Honor, free from US-imposed supply-chain constraints now that its no longer part of Huawei, says it has bagged a number of chipset deals with various suppliers. They include US big-hitters Intel and Qualcomm.
Honor referenced the deals, which also include AMD, MediaTek, Micron Technology, Microsoft, Samsung, SK hynix and Sony, as part of an announcement about a new brand strategy for 2021 and the launch of new products.
CEO George Zhao, as reported by Reuters, reflected on the last five months as being an extremely difficult but meaningful time for Honor. He added, perhaps as a way of explanation for a new turn in direction, that we feel the weight of expectation from industry partners and consumers.
