Island Home hits dolphin, breaks door

The Steamship Authority ferry Island Home struck a dolphin Wednesday in Woods Hole with enough force to damage an evacuation door. The vessel was subsequently sent to the SSA’s Fairhaven facility for repairs and is expected to leave there “shortly,” according to SSA spokesman Sean Driscoll. Jim Malkin, the Vineyard’s representative on the SSA board, said the vessel is slated to return to service at noon Friday.
Martha’s Vineyard Times Editor George Brennan was aboard the vessel when the allision occurred and described it as “jarring.”

Schedule of events: The Grand Circuit heads to The Meadowlands on Saturday (May 29) with two $30,000 divisions in the second leg of the Miss Versatility series for older mare trotters. Then on Sunday (May 30), the Harrah’s Philadelphia program is topped by three $100,000 Invitationals the Maxie Lee for open trotters, the Commodore Barry for open pacers, and the Betsy Ross for pacing mares.

Schedule of events: The Grand Circuit heads to The Meadowlands on Saturday (May 22) with two $50,000 divisions in the first leg of the Graduate Series for four-year-old open trotters.
Last Time: One thing was certain at the conclusion of Saturday night’s (May 15) $141,250 Arthur J. Cutler Memorial at The Meadowlands: Manchego is not the retiring type.
The six-year-old mare went a herculean mile in taking the 24th edition of the event for free for all trotters, scoring in 1:51.1. Pretty good for a horse who had called it a career after taking the TVG Open Trot last November over arch rival Atlanta to sew up divisional honours.
