So aside some pomp and circumstance in a pared-down ceremony what was missing from the Queen’s Speech on May 11?
With 26 new bills and four carried over from the last parliamentary session, the Johnson government has tabled the heaviest legislative agenda since 2015.
In that agenda are some clear messages about the Conservatives’ post-pandemic vision: strengthened police powers and tighter restrictions on protest, while exercising the right to vote becomes more challenging; Britain will be an even more hostile environment for asylum seekers; property developers shall have a freer hand; the track towards NHS privatisation accelerates, and the government will splash cash on big ticket infrastructure projects.

On March 30 and 31 National Education Union (NEU) members took strike action at Leaways special school, backed by Labour Party members and MP Diane Abbott.
These marked the 13th and 14th strike days at the private school in Upper Clapton, operated by the for-profit Kedleston Group.
Nearly 90 pupils attend Leaways with many previously excluded from mainstream education. All have established social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs with Hackney and other local authorities paying Kedleston over £53,000 per pupil.

Campaign to save training fund before it is scrapped
Paddy Lillis, Usdaw, general secretary, writes:
Let’s stop the government scrapping the Union Learning Fund in England at the end of March.
This unique scheme provides lifelong learning in many local workplaces, bringing together employers, education providers and trade unions to give workers a second chance at learning by contributing time, money and resources.
Learning and reskilling will be core to helping us recover from the impact of Covid-19 and dealing with the changing world of work because of automation.
